Rice Packaging

Rice is one of the most widely consumed cereal grains in the world, predicted to bring in over USD $365 billion in 2023. With a projected CAGR of 3% expected from the rice market over the next five years, the opportunities in this sector are growing.

As a primary agricultural commodity, rice is among the top staples in the foods sector for an ever-increasing number of countries. Currently, Asia accounts for more than 80% of production and consumption in over 120 countries, including the largest producers, China and India.

We take a closer look at the sector, some of the growth influencing factors and find out more about how the opportunities can be harnessed in the coming months and years.

Trends driving growth

Consumer habits continue to drive trends, and according to industry intelligence, with demand rising for a wider range of specialty rice varieties, trade in long-grain rice has driven growth significantly. The fast food sector has also experienced huge growth in the last few years, also driven by consumer habit and lifestyle changes and this has influenced an upward trend.

Growth in both consumer and commercial circles is contributing to accelerated development in rice mill machinery and is leading producers to re-think packaging as a result. Packaging plays a significant part in growth and this has been highlighted recently in emerging economies, where demand has increased as packaging has become more consistent and attractive.

Meeting demand and harnessing future opportunities

For production, packaging and distribution to meet these rising demands, consistency and flexibility is needed at every phase. Distribution will rely heavily on speed and output, consistency and flexibility in order to handle some of the biggest opportunities.

Automation has provided the answers to many packaging challenges, especially within the food sector. While many producers know this, finding the way forward with the right machinery in place requires specific, often tailored advice to maximise the investment.
