Sustainability-Focussed Packaging Continues to Drive Product Sales

According to industry reports, sustainability-focussed packaging and products have accelerated at a rate almost three times faster than consumer-packaged goods on a global scale. Experts believe that the driving force behind this significant change is the increasing awareness among millennials of the world’s climate crisis. It is expected that this trend will continue and the market in environmentally-friendly products is estimated to reach $140.5bn during the next five years.

The consumer world has been changing for some time. The younger generation, for example, are typically leaning closer towards environmentally-friendly products, organic foods, natural flavourings and ingredients – and sustainable packaging is, in some consumer circles, the only way to go.

Sustainable, eco-friendly packaging reflects values

As the global climate crisis gains weight across the consumer landscape, environmentally-friendly packaging choices are becoming a reflection of a consumer’s values. This kind of pressure is partly behind the recent acceleration of growth in this packaging sector. Packaging then begins to not only reflect the consumer’s personal choices and values, but also the values of the retailers, stockists and of the brands themselves.

More and more big brands are moving towards a growing number of eco-friendly initiatives in response to increasing demand from the entire chain – consumer – retailer – distributor – brand and everyone else in between. Every area of production and distribution has been affected from raw materials sourcing to marketing and the pace keeps quickening.

Facing the challenges of sustainability

As the demand for sustainable materials, products, packaging and delivery increases, so too do the complexities. Although the use of materials such as bamboo and other sustainable materials is increasing, the processes are still relatively new and manufacturers, particularly in the cosmetics and tissue industries, need to ensure that quality is also a high priority.

Renewable materials are often harder to process than synthetic ones and many contain higher levels of stickiness or retain moisture unlike common synthetic fibres. This can often be overcome on the production line as the latest packaging machines offer much more flexibility for customisation than their traditional counterparts.

Packaging solutions must also remain as eco-friendly as possible and ensure the sustainability benefits are not outweighed by other elements, such as higher energy consumption during the production or packaging processes.
