The US Packaging Industry: 2022 Growth, Trends and Opportunities

Posted by Carla Colwell
01st February, 2022

2022 looks positive for the US packaging industry, with further growth and exciting opportunities ahead. Growth is predicted to continue for the next two years at a CAGR of 4.1% according to the latest reports, and technology is helping manufacturers handle demand and meet regulatory guidelines.

New relationships, networking opportunities, eCommerce growth, automation and much more are on the horizon for the US packaging industry in 2022. With live events planned too, during the first quarter, Jacob White Packaging is looking forward to building new relationships after more than two years away from the ‘scene’.

Tissue World Miami 2022

Tissue World Miami is just around the corner, and we will be there at our first physical event since 2019! The event is an exciting opportunity to connect with other industry professionals and discuss the trends and influences, sustainability initiatives and innovations in packaging machines design. Jacob White Packaging will be on stand C51 during the exhibition, planned for 16th-18th March 2022. Come and see us at the Miami Beach Conference Center and let’s talk about tissues.

We know that plans can be tenuous during the current situation and travel restrictions, or conference numbers can change. However, we are staying positive and hope that this and other packaging conferences and expos will resume this year.

The return of live events is an exciting prospect for the packaging industry, giving us all something to look forward to. What other trends should we be looking out for this year?

The rise and rise of eCommerce

The rise in demand for eCommerce since the start of the pandemic has been unprecedented and has boosted an already competitive marketplace. With this showing no sign of slowing for the foreseeable future, it is an exceptional time for opportunity across the manufacturing and packaging sectors.

Flexible packaging and plastics technology

Across the US, some of the biggest driving trends are in flexible packaging technologies and plastics. We can expect to see some interesting developments in the coming months in these types of materials, with heavy investment over the past five years.

Outsourcing packaging

While growth is almost a foregone conclusion, businesses are increasingly focussing on a cost-effective approach as a part of future-proofing and protecting the industry. Outsourcing packaging has offered an opportunity to concentrate on the core business operations, reduce the cost and protect the workforce.

Many manufacturers have diversified over the past two years and outsourcing has enabled greater flexibility. This trend is likely to continue as eCommerce demand grows higher.

Automated packaging machines

The uptake of automation in packaging is expected to continue to make an impact this year in the US. Businesses are protecting the workforce while accelerating output and creating flexibility. With machines able to quickly adapt to the size, speed, and materials changes, automating these key processes enables businesses to harness the opportunities that are out there.

Future-proofing is key

In more than 100 years of building packaging machines and supporting our clients, we’ve never experienced a time like this. Unprecedented growth, almost limitless opportunities and accelerating technological solutions. With exciting times ahead, future-proofing is key to protecting both operations and people – let us help you.
